Singapore is an amazing mix of Chinese, Indian and Malay culture blended together to make a uniquely welcoming international, multicultural atmosphere.

You’ll find when you visit Singapore it has many unique features.  One of which is Singlish, Singaporeans own version of English.Where Is Singapore?

As any Singaporean will tell you English is their first language but not their mother tongue.  “Ok-la” is used instead of plain old boring “yes”.  So when you are shopping, eating and staying in Singapore you can use “ok-la” and fit right in to this bright, bustling Asian city.

Ok-la wants to give you some recommendations for getting the most out of your visit to Singapore, whether you are on a stop over or part of a south East Asian tour.

We hope this guide to Singapore gives you some ideas of what to do, see and discover in Singapore – so ignore those you say Singapore is boring – take it as is, go with it and enjoy – ok-la?

Given how well known and successful a place it is, it is a curious fact that many people are still not exactly sure where is Singapore. Not only in geographical terms but in political and economic terms, too. That being said, many people do have accurate, albeit very vague, notions about the place. So the fact that it is somewhere in Asia , relatively small in landmass and population yet well run, wealthy and proud of maintaining clean streets is generally well known. It is helpful, therefore, to investigate further in order to arrive at a more detailed knowledge of the country.

Where is Singapore in the World?

Geographically it is in South East Asia. More precisely, a set of islands in between Malaysia and Indonesia. It is said that in size the country is approximately 3.5 times the size of Washington DC hence it is often referred to as a city-state. It has a hot, humid, tropical climate with two main monsoon seasons; from December to March the Northeastern monsoon; and from June to September the Southwestern monsoon. Due to its location the country is a prime point for South East Asian sea routes.

Economically it is a powerhouse, an Asian tiger if you like. A free market economy that is both extremely developed and extremely successful. It enjoys a per capita GDP that exceeds that of many other developed countries and its economy is export led especially in areas such as the following: , pharmaceuticals, information technology products and consumer electronics. There is also an increasingly growing financial sector too.

Politically it is worthwhile noting that Singapore was as a British trading colony founded in 1819. During 1963 It became part of the Malaysian Federation and two years on from that became a fully independent nation. Due to its British connection its legal system is based on English Common Law. It is now officially known as the Republic of Singapore and operates as a parliamentary republic. It has four main political parties so is a pluralist political entity. It has three distinct branches of government in the form of the Executive, Legislative and Judicial. The country has a President who acts as head of State and a Prime Minister who acts as the head of the government.

This information has explained a little bit more than the vague notions many people have of the country. However, it is still only snapshot albeit an accurate portrayal nonetheless. For those who wish to know more about where is Singapore on the world stage today there is a wealth of fascinating facts and opinions to discover about this small yet highly capable and successful country.
